Since opening in 1839, more than 170,000 people have been laid to rest in 53,000 graves at Highgate. Perhaps the most famous interment is that of philosopher Karl Marx, in the East Cemetery.
The official Highgate Cemetery website says that commissioning a memorial ‘may be the only opportunity [people] have for creating a work of art with the living to commemorate the dead.’
